My heart goes out especially to those who are entombed alive right now in collapsed buildings and houses. We already know that thousands have died, and the toll will be far worse than that.
Some geologists compare it to the 2008 Great Sichuan Earthquake in China, which registered 8.0 and took nearly 90,000 lives. The epicenters of the two quakes are about a thousand miles apart.
I was in China as part of the Samaritan's Purse team that responded to that catastrophe, and I'll never forget the miles of devastation in places such as Hanwang, Shifang, and Dujiangyan. A disproportionate number of the victims in China were children killed in poorly built schools.
If you are moved with compassion and able to help, I recommend donations to Samaritan's Purse. The primary needs right now are medical care, shelter, and clean water. Those are our specialties.
